Bank of Maldives has today announced the installation of solar powered streetlights in H.Dh. Kumundhoo. With this project, the island is reducing their carbon foot print with the installation of 22 solar powered streetlights in the islands main road. This initiative is part of its ‘Aharenge Bank Community Fund’, a nationwide campaign to empower individuals to contribute to society by conducting sustainable community projects.
“We are keen on supporting sustainable environment friendly projects and this has been a very special project. With the installation of solar powered lights in the islands main road will benefit the community and reduce the load on electricity. The islands council has shared their concern of shutting down the main road lights due to the load on electricity and the difficulties faced by the community. We hope that with this project it will ease this difficulty for the community” commented BML’s Manager of Public Relations Mohamed Saeed.
Commenting on the project, the winner Ameen Mohamed stated “Our hope is that the community trust and be educated on the importance of reducing the carbon footprint. With this project, the roads of Kumundhoo will be safe space even during the times when there is no electricity and reduce the cost of electricity by 20%. We thank BML for the financial support to complete the project and the trust and cooperation by the community to make this project a success”
Under the Aharenge Bank Community Fund, BML will select and allocate MVR 50,000 to five projects in the areas of education, environment, sports and community development during each quarter of the fiscal year.
